Mayor's Committee For Children and Youth
History
In May of 1998 Kathleen Guy, the editor of the book, OUR PROMISE TO CHILDREN, came to Dryden during her Ontario twelve city book promotional tour. |
The book which was funded through the Canadian Institute for Studies of Children At Risk maintains that the early years of a child's life are extremely important for brain development and "wiring". Secure, loving and stimulating environments are absolutely necessary to produce children who become healthy, intelligent, productive members of society. The book discusses studies undertaken by the University of Toronto which showed that for every $1.00 invested into children's education and care (Nursery Schools and Child Care) a $2.00 return would result. These studies confirm that prevention of problems is much more effective and cost efficient than trying to correct a problem after the fact.
As a result of Ms. Guy's visit and the information contained within the book, OUR PROMISE TO CHILDREN, Mayor Roger Valley established, THE MAYOR'S COMMITTEE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH. Since that time members of agencies, organizations, service clubs and citizens at large have met to review and assess services for the children and youth of Dryden. When gap or need is identified a subcommittee is formed and work begins to address the issue. Over the past three years projects which have been undertaken are: - Support to establish a Youth Centre for Dryden teens - The development or expansion of services to children and youth in crisis - Organizing and carrying out an annual Anti-Violence Campaign
Currently, The Mayor's Committee for Children and Youth has identified and is working on three new objectives:
1. The need for affordable recreational activities for all of Dryden's children and youth 2. The establishment of a central access point to post and announce all activities in Dryden for children and youth. 3. The establishment of a campaign to educate our community and promote Positive Self-Esteem in our children and youth
For additional information or to help work for our children and youth contact any of the members of the organizing committee.
