Vacations should be fun and worry-free, but too often they end in disappointment when you become the victim of crime. Most crime is preventable and here are a few tips to ensure that you are not a victim.
Vehicle security
- When on vacation, carry all pertinent vehicle information with you - registration and insurance cards for vehicles, boats, RV’s or snow machines.
- Park your vehicle in a well-lit area of hotels, motels and camp sites.
- Keep your vehicle locked at all times when unattended.
- Properly register your vehicle along with boats, RV’s and snow machines with the hotel, motel, or camp site.
Securing your boat, RV or snow machine
- Properly secure all boat covers and tie downs.
- If you remove your boat/snow machine trailer from a vehicle, make sure the trailer tongue is locked. Try to chain the trailer to something solid.
- Secure and pad lock all boat motors, trolling motors and gas cans in your boat.
- Make sure all doors and windows of RV’s are locked and secured when not in use.
- Secure snow machines to the trailer with pad locks and chains.
Securing your property
- Do not leave personal belongings in your in your vehicle. If you have to, leave personal belongings in your vehicle cover them or keep them out of site.
- Do not leave items or personal property such as tackle, depth finders, fishing rods in your boat. Remove boat motors if you are unable to secure them properly.
- Do not leave bottles of liquor, beer or coolers in you vehicle, boat, RV. If you do, make sure it is secure and out of site.
- Do not leave valuables, money, CD players, camera’s or sunglasses in your vehicle.
- Take inventory of what you have with you.
- Record brands of tackle or fishing rods, make, models and serial numbers of boat motors, depth finders, CD players. Mark your property with some design that only you will be able to recognize.
