Fire Truck

1899
Bylaw # 9 of the Township of Van Horne passed a Bylaw for the prevention of fires in the Municipality of said Township.

1908
First fire department was formed in 1908. Mayor Alfred Pitt was in the chair, Councillors were Jas McFayden, J. Sanders, I.J. Clark, T.W. Thompson, C.U. Coombe, Thos. Davidson. Councillors for Fire Department were C.W. Coombe and Jas McFayden.

Fire Chief was Alex Kennedy. He was chief from 1908 to 1910. Firefighters were W.J. Robinson, F. Foulis, I.J. Wilde, A. Berry, H. Adair, I.J. Clark, Alex Upton, Jim Gough. They were a bucket brigade.

1910
Fire Department purchased and erected a standpipe for water for fire wagons.

1910
Bylaw passed to purchase chemical fire engine from Hugh Cameron of Toronto at cost of $700.00.

1911
Chairman of fire department had a sleigh made for chemical fire engine for winter use at a cost of $20.00.

1911
Fire Department purchased two small chemical fire extinguishers and two eight candle power electric lights. One to be installed outside of fire hall and one at a Bell Box. Also made arrangements for water, in case of fire, to be hauled by tank and team.

1912
That the Fire Committee look into the questions of fire protection and report to Council at the next meeting on Dec. 12, 1912.

1913
That the fire department was authorized to purchase one ladder, one torch, also hooks, cables and chains.

1913
Council had a By-law drafted for fire protection and debenture of $5,000.00 to build a fire hall.

1915
First and second reading of By-law #93 to establish a fire department. Dave Anderson was officially appointed as Fire Chief for the Town of Dryden and authorized to purchase whatever equipment he thought was necessary for the department.

1915
The Council gave the third reading on By-law #93 for the establishing of a fire department and passed as read.

1917
Fire department purchased two roof ladders, 16' long and two extension ladders, 28' long and 15 fire pails.

1918
Resolution that Fire Chief, Dave Anderson be authorized to purchase two ladders, one 26' and one 36' long and two roof ladders, one 12' and one 14' long. Also, six fire pails and fire alarm cards.

At this same meeting of Council, a rate of pay was set for the fire chief and firemen:

- L.J. Wilde, acid & soda - $1

- J. Gibson, bell ringer - $1
- 1st team to fire engine - $5
- 1st water tank to fire - $5 (each additional tank of water - $5)

These men were to be paid at this rate for fires and half this rate for fire practices.

1920
Council approved the purchase of a two wheel, silver tank pressure water and soda machine, with attached hose reel and ladders. The church bell was used as a fire alarm and was rang by hand.

1920
Council approved notion to install 8" pump for fire protection on Rhodes Property.

1922
Council approved that Fire Chief, Dave Anderson be hired as fire marshal at a rate of $100 per year. They also approved that permanent firemen be paid $2 per call for the first two hours at any fire and $1 per hour after that. Each man was paid $2 for each practice. Practice included cleaning and polishing all equipment.

1922
Council passed a motion to forbid burning of refuse in yards during the months of June, July and August. Also, passed a motion to purchase a sleigh to carry the water tank.

1923
Council passed a motion for the tender of Mr. Zentil to build a pump house.

1923
The fire department purchased 500 feet of hose and a hose reel, two nozzles and necessary couplings for the same.

1923
Town clerk instructed to prepare by-law to borrow $27,500.00 for the purpose of fire protection and supply CPR.

1925
That the fire chief order with the help of the Clerk, from the Bickle Fire Engine Co., a hose wagon, at a cost of $300 and fire nozzles at a cost of $73.05.

1925
That Peter Heenan, M.P.P. be asked to support the intended legislation to have members of a volunteer fire department come under the Compensation Act. At this same meeting it was asked that the Clerk order 12 firemen's coats from C.H. Petch, Ottawa.

That the tender from New Dryden Lumber Co. of $6,978 for building a hose tower, be accepted and work to start immediately and to be finished by December 1, 1925, at the Town hall.

1926
That Council purchase six hundred feet of fire hose from Dunlop Fire and Rubber Goods Co. at a cost of $840.

1926
That the fire department give any assistance to Van Horne Township, in case of a fire directly adjoining the Town of Dryden and that any cost of calls be paid by the Municipality of Van Horne and that the Town of Dryden have priority rights to any calls.

1928
That the fire department accept the offer and try out a Dryden Paper Co. truck for a hose truck, during the winter months.

1928
That the clerk order from Sterling Siren Fire Alarm Co. a model "M" siren for the sounding of a suitable fire alarm.

1929
That Council purchase from Durance Motors a combination chemical and hose truck, fitted at factory to a 1 1/2 ton chev chassis, complete equipment to conform with specifications and quotations submitted by Bickle Fire Engine Ltd. for April 17, 1929, and also the truck to have double wheels on rear. Cost to be $2,122 Received in Dryden on September 5th, 1929. (This is the truck that is now on display in the firehall)

1930
Fire department purchased six hundred feet of fire hose and one Siamese connection.

1935
That fire practice be held not less than every second month and that the hose be laid out and water run through it.

1936
That Bert Berrey become treasurer of fire department in place of Frank Foulis.

1940
Fire wagon sold to H. Ingebrigtsen.

1941
Fire Chief Dave Anderson advised Council that it was impossible to save the Don McArthur house on West River Road with only a chemical tank on a truck and no way to get water after the chemicals ran out. After discussion Council decided to have a 2" London fire pump sent on approval and if satisfactory, would purchase it.

1945
That H.J. Adair be appointed as fire chief for the Town of Dryden at a salary of $100 per year and a By-law to be drawn up to that effect.

1945
By-law #343 appointing fire chief and setting rate of wages for volunteer firemen.

1946
Council sold ladder wagon, ladders were sold for $15 to Walter Ankney.

1946
That Fire Chief Adair, and three firemen attend the firemans training school in Fort William on June 24, 1946.

1946
A new hose truck was purchased from Brandon.

1955
An equipment truck was purchased.

1958
A 500 GPM pumper truck was purchased. First fire truck with pump. A new ambulance vehicle was donated by the J.C's to the Town Fire Department. Before this, an old police van was used.

1969
Another 625 GPM pumper truck was purchased.

1978
An 840 GPM pumper tele-squirt with a 75' ladder was purchased, with a 1000 GPM prepiped nozzle pumper.

1978
New firehall and police station - opened. Governor General Ed Schreyer attended opening ceremonies.

1980
Jaws of life equipment was purchased for auto extrication. Started to respond to Highway Collision calls.

1982
840 triple combination pumper truck purchased from King Seagrave #23.

1984
35 sets of firefighter turnout gear, boots and helmets were purchased.

1985
GM suburban purchased for Chief's vehicle inspections and for carrying auto extrication equipment.

1989
New equipment truck and command post vehicle purchased from Dependable Trucks.

1990
Chief/Inspection van purchased from local GM dealer.

1994
Ford/Rescue - auto extrication vehicle purchased #25 - seating for five and all equipment accessible from exterior and interior compartments, now Equipment #22..

1996
Superior 1050 Pumper purchased #21 - 32 sets of turnout gear purchased.

1998
Amalgamation and merger of the Dryden Fire Department and the Barclay Fire Department to form the City of Dryden Fire Service.

1999
Suburban purchased for inspection, fire prevention, and inspection duties, also serves as Emergency Incident Command Post #26.

2001
Ford Equipment vehicle purchased #33 - seating for 6, 4 SCBA, P.P.V. Fan, Exterior Storage Compartments.

2003
Unit #24 - Smeal 6-person cab Quint Pumper with 75' ladder, includes a pre-piped monitor, pumps 1500 GPM. Carries ground ladders, 333.2 gallons of water and 30 gallons of foam. 4" supply line, 3 - 1 3/4 attack lines and 1 - 3" attack hand lines. 4 Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, high rise pack, and various power and hand tools.

2004
Purchased 2004 1500 gallon booster tanker, Unit 32. This unit carries 4" supply hose as well as a folding water tank and portable pump.

Hall 1 moved to our new 10,600 sq. ft. location at 189 Colonization Avenue. The new hall features office space, a training centre and 3 drive through bays housing 6 apparatus.

2005
New helmets purchased for Hall 2 Firefighters.

Breathing apparatus updated with the purchase of MSA 4500 (1 hour) units.

2006
New Rescue Unit 34 purchased for Hall 2 (2004 GMC Sierra 2500HD), it carries equipment for portable pump water supply, water / ice rescue. This unit features a 5-person crew cab, 4X4, and a capped truck box. New Rescue Unit 25 purchased for Hall 1 (2006 GM 5500), it carries heavy hydraulic auto extrication equipment, hazardous materials equipment and rapid intervention equipment. This unit features a 5-person crew cab, 4x4, a roof top command lighting unit, dual power plants and equipment storage on slide out trays.

Maverick combination tool cutter / spreader purchased for auto extrication and rescues.

2007
54 sets of Turnout Gear (Personal Protection Equipment) P.P.E. were purchased.

2008
100th Anniversary of the Dryden Fire Service.

Refurbishing of the Antique 1929 Bickle Fire Truck.

2010
Council approved the full-time career Emergency and Education Officer position for the Dryden Fire Service.

2011
New Pumper Unit 21 received.  #21 is a 2011 Eastway with 1250 GPM pump, holds 800 gallons of water and Darley pump.  It has a 6 person custom Metro Spartan cab and chassis, interior mid-mount pump panel, foam tank, Thermal Imaging Camera and AED, 5 seat-mounted S.C.B.A. (4500), spare bottles and 6 portable radios.  It also has 4" supply hose, 1 3/4" and 3" attack lines, pre-piped electric remote deck gun, foam pro pack, portable fan, portable pump, entry tools, spill kit and command light unit.

Command #26 replaced with a new 2011 Ford Expedition Max.

Prevention #28 established as a prevention unit for the Emergency & Education Officer for use in delivering public education and emergency management programs within the community.  The 2007 Dodge Charger was donated by the Dryden Police Service and Dryden Police Services Board.
