The City's policy is to keep the main emergency routes passable to ordinary vehicles at all times. This applies to the highways, Sandy Beach Road, and routes from the highways to the hospital. Main urban routes including bus routes will be kept passable to reasonably skilled drivers at all times, and plowed out to curb width within 24 hours of a storm passing. Main shopping areas will be picked up, including sidewalks, as soon as possible after a storm. Local streets may become impassable during a major storm. The City's goal is to have all roads passable to ordinary traffic within 12 hours of the end of the storm, and plowed out full width within 48 hours.
Back lanes have bottom priority, and it is considered acceptable if they are plowed within 72 hours of the end of a storm. Salting and sanding is not ordinarily done on local residential streets or back lanes.
The City clears driveways for qualified seniors. Generally, you are qualified if you receive GAINS supplement, and have no able-bodied person living in your house.
