At the Dryden Pool & Fitness Centre, we offer advanced leadership courses for both the Canadian Red Cross and the Canadian Lifesaving Society. Candidates have the opportunity to become certified Lifeguards or/and Instructors.
Working in the field of Aquatics is very rewarding for both students and adults. Full-time and part-time positions provide great challenges and teach candidates valuable skills highly regarded by future employers.
Following are the courses necessary to become a certified Lifeguard:
Bronze Medallion Award & Emergency First Aid (22-24 hrs) This course teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, defense methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a 500 m times swim (20 laps in 15 minutes). Prerequisites for Bronze Medallion: - 13 years of age or Bronze Star Certification

Bronze Cross Award (18-20 hrs) Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision of aquatic facilities. Candidates considering future employment in aquatics need to take this course to continue with the next levels of leadership training. The timed swim for Bronze Cross is 600 m (24 laps in 18 minutes). Prerequisites for Bronze Cross: - Bronze Medallion Award (does not have to be current) - Emergency First Aid Certification (does not have to be current)

National Lifeguard Service Award (NLS) (40 hrs) NLS is the only nationally recognized lifeguard training program. The course focuses on developing a sound understanding lifeguarding principles, good judgment, teamwork, and a responsible attitude toward the role of the Lifeguard. Prerequisites for NLS: - 16 years of age - Bronze Cross Award (does not have to be current) - Standard First Aid/CPR Level C (must be current within 2 years)

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course (AWSI) (30 + 8 hrs) The Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course is the first step toward becoming a Water Safety Instructor of the Red Cross Swim Program. It offers a great opportunity to develop leadership skills. Prerequisites for AWSI: - 15 years of age - Ability to swim at Swim Kids Level 10 standard

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course (WSI) (25 hrs) The Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim Program. It offers a great chance to develop skills and gain confidence as a leader. Prerequisites for WSI: - 16 years of age - Assistant Water Safety Instructor Award (AWSI)
