June 2023 Proclaimed Pride Month
WHEREAS The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states in Article 7 that “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice”, and;
WHEREAS The City of Dryden’s Vision is that “Dryden is recognized as a vibrant, safe, healthy and inclusive community with a diverse economy, providing an exceptional quality of life”, and;
WHEREAS One of the City of Dryden’s Guiding Principles is that “Community leadership honours, welcomes and accepts all people, hearing their diverse voices and working to strengthen cultural relationships and building community inclusiveness”, and;
WHEREAS To pay tribute to the 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals in the City of Dryden, the Pride Flag which symbolizes the diversity of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, is hoisted, and;
WHEREAS June is Pride Month, to recognize and commemorate the Stonewall Riots which took place in June 1969 in New York City, sparking the liberation movement for human rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Homophobia and transphobia in the forms of microaggressions, violence and discrimination continue towards many 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and;
WHEREAS In recognition of the significant contributions and accomplishments of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, the City of Dryden is observing Pride Month in June 2023. This celebration highlights the importance of diversity, inclusivity, and acceptance of all the individuals of Dryden regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED
THAT I, Mayor Jack Harrison, on behalf of Dryden City Council, do HEREBY PROCLAIM June 2023 as Pride Month in the City of Dryden and encourage citizens to continue developing understanding, tolerance, inclusion, and acceptance of the 2SLGBTQIA+ citizens of Dryden.
