Honouring 150 Years of the Signing of Treaty 3
WHEREAS on October 3, 1873, Treaty #3 was signed between the British Crown and the Anishinaabe Nation near the site of Animakee Wa Zhing – Sacred Place of the Thunderbird, which recognized the sovereignty of the Anishinaabe People and their rights to their lands, waters, resources, Government, and Culture; and
WHEREAS in the words of Treaty #3, these rights “Will last as long as the Sun will Shine and Water runs, that is to say Forever” and,
WHEREAS on October 3, 2023, Grand Council Treaty #3 Honours 150 Years of the Signing of Treaty #3; and,
WHEREAS the City of Dryden joins Treaty #3 in commemorating this historic agreement and honours the wisdom, resilience, and cultural traditions of their Anishinaabe ancestors who negotiated this treaty; and
WHEREAS the City of Dryden and the City of Dryden Working Circle support Treaty #3 and their continued commitment to work together in mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation for a better future for all.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED
THAT I, Mayor Jack Harrison, on behalf of Dryden City Council, do HEREBY PROCLAIM October 3, 2023 as a Day Honouring 150 Years of the Signing of Treaty 3 and urge all citizens to work together to promote diversity and inclusion in our community and to foster positive relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous People in order to make meaningful and lasting change.
