NWMO 2023 Funding Agreements
DRYDEN, ON – January 9, 2023 – At the January 9, 2023 Committee of the Whole Meeting, City of Dryden staff brought forward a recommendation to Council to execute an NWMO Significant Neighboring Community Funding Agreement for the 2023 Learn More Program and a 2023-2024 Near-term Investment Funding Agreement.
The acceptance of the NWMO funding does not constitute the Municipality’s support for the Adaptive Phase Management (APM) project nor the selection of the Township of Ignace as a final host community.
The proposed NWMO agreement for the Learn More program has an estimated value of $1,249,995 and will consist of funding for the following:
- Special Projects Manager (fully funded resource)
- Economic Development Manager & Junior Planner (partially funded resources)
- Two student employee positions
- Legal counsel and professional communication support
- Salary allocation for municipal staff and Council to cover involvement in Adaptive Phase Management initiatives
- General Operating and Travel expenses
- Youth Centre support
- Municipal strategic planning and organizational development, community investment marketing as well as architectural and engineering services for community capacity projects
- Community Well-being fund
The proposed Near-term Investment (NTI) funding has an estimated value of $2,000,000 and is intended to be used for qualifying near-term activities in 2023 and 2024.
“Supporting the communities where we live and work is very important to the NWMO,” said Lise Morton, Vice President, Site Selection, NWMO. “As a significant neighbouring community to the proposed DGR site, we are happy to be providing near term investment funding to support projects that will benefit residents of Dryden.”
The City of Dryden continues to ensure that Council, City staff and residents have the opportunity to learn more about the APM project, including the safety of the proposed facility and the impacts, both positive and negative, that it may have on the community.
“As a significant neighboring community to one of the proposed Deep Geological Repository sites, it is in Dryden’s best interest to be fully engaged in the process and become knowledgeable so we can better understand the risks and benefits of this potential project. We appreciate the NWMO providing funding to enable this opportunity to learn and advance our community interests, which we accept with no commitment to the project or selected site.”, commented Mayor Jack Harrison.
The funding also ensures that ratepayers in Dryden do not experience any financial burdens relating to the community being a Significant Neighboring Community.
A by-law for the execution of these funding agreements will be brought forward to the January 23rd Meeting of Council for a vote.
